floppy disc formating

After putting a disc in the floppy dive, and clicking on
that drive, I get the message "disc is not formatted, do
you want to format now." This floppy previously worked in
this computer. Please help, Thanks

Did it work on this computer while it was running Windows XP? Do
other diskettes work in this drive now?

If the answer to both questions is yes, the diskette is clearly
unreadable. Diskettes are not a good choice for long-term storage
of data.
