floplock.exe does not seem to work on W2K

Mike

Per MS W2K Server Resource Kit instructions, I installed
the floppy lock service using instsrv and floplock.exe on
my W2K Pro workstation. I configured the service to start
automatically using an account with administrator
privileges. When I log on as a user account, I still have
write/modify access to the floppy drive. The service is
started and I even rebooted the machine. Has anyone else
had this problem on W2K Pro? Am I wrong in assuming it
should work since it is part of the W2K Server Resource
Kit? Any suggestions?

Hi Mike,
So you used the "instsrv <service name> <drive>:\<folder
name>\floplock.exe" command. What did you use for the <service name>
parameter? The "<drive>:\<folder name>" should point to where the Resource
Kit or the ZAK is installed as well.

You should also verify that the service is set to startup automatically.

The following procedure can assist in setting this:
To configure the Floplock service to start automatically when you log on
to Windows NT, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Services.
3. In the list of services, double-click the service name you specified in
the <service name> parameter, and then click Startup.
4. Click Automatic, click OK, and then click Close.
5. Restart your computer.

Curits,

Thanks for the reply.

I used "Floppy Lock" for the service name. I copied
Floplock.exe to the %systemroot%, and the service is
installed and configured to run automatically. I have
restarted the computer and it still does not work. Have
you actually istalled this service on a W2K machine and
got it working? Do you have any other ideas on why my
installation may not be working?

Hi Mike,
I do not currently have it running personally but I have seen it run fine
in the past using the instructions from the KB. You might want to make sure
the system has proper NTFS rights to the folder where the .exe is residing.
Also verify that the service type is manual when viewing the services from
the context of the user account where you desire it to work. If this still
shows fine I will attempt to do a repro on my end and see if I can't pin
down the problem a bit further.

Curits,

Everything looks fine. The instructions are to allow the
service to start automatically - "verify that the service
type is manual when viewing the services from the context
of the user account where you desire it to work". Let me
know what you come up with. I'm stumped at this point.

Mike,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

I just finished attempting to reproduce this issue and I get it to work
just by following the instructions with no modification. I am starting the
service using the system account and for admins and power users there is no
restricion as expected. However for a regular user a message that access is
denied is displayed.

Curits,

Thanks for trying to duplicate my problem. I'll try once
more or I'll try starting with a fresh install of W2K. If
that doesn't work for me, I'll just disable the floppy in
the bios and password protect it.

Thanks again,

Mike

Your welcome Mike, I am sorry that I could not duplicate the problem
exactly. If it still does not work can you copy the screen output of what
you typed to setup the service? Maybe that will shed some more light.

Just to clarify - you're installing the service on a
Windows 2K Pro OS? I would like to speak to you in depth
about this situation but I am uncomfortable about posting
my phone # here. Do you have a way I may contact you?

Mike,
Actually, I was using Win2K Server, but that should not make a difference.

I would suggest you call our regular support lines and seek assistance that
way as it will be more productive for you.
