Flash Player Update (KB923789) fails to install

I've searched for similar problems on this newsgroup, and I've found various
posters that have managed to get this update to install, but I still can't.
Automatic update silently fails. The manual update says I have the wrong
version of Flash Player. I've installed the Flash Player from Adobe's site,
using both my regular web browser (Opera) and IEv6. Still, every time I turn
on my laptop, Windows Update says I have to install this.

Any more thoughts?

Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs
Do you see "Adobe Flash Player 9 Active X" there?
Remove it.
Reboot.

Visit here in IE:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&promoid=BIOW
Uncheck Yahoo Toolbar and click on "Install Now".
When it is done - reboot.

Visit here in IE:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-069.mspx
and click on the link for, "Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 - Download
the update"...
(

and save that to your computer...
Run that file to install the patch...

Record the results - if successful - reboot and either way - come back and
let us know.

Done; no problems.

Same as before; it still says the version is wrong.

That is good - as the article states - you aren't vulnerable anymore anyway.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-069.mspx
"Caveats: This bulletin is for customers using Macromedia Flash Player
version 6 from Adobe. Customers that have followed the guidance in Adobe
Security Bulletin APSB06-11, issued September 12, 2006, are not at risk from
these vulnerabilities."

Which leads you to:
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb06-11.html
"Solution: Adobe recommends all users of Flash Player 8.0.24.0 and earlier
versions upgrade to the newest version 9.0.16.0, by downloading it from the
Player Download Center, or by using the auto-update mechanism within the
product when prompted."

So you do not even need it.
