Flash file in PPT 2007

Paul

Hi-

I am running PowerPoint 2007 (urp). I have a slide from a presentation
created with an earlier version that has a flash movie in it. Of course, it
always worked fine in the earlier version without any special set up. If I
copy the slide into PPT 2007, the animation also runs fine – in Compatibility
Mode. If I save the file as a .pptx 2007 format, it won’t play, and I just
see a blank slide with a big X drawn across it in Normal View. I went
through the help system to add a flash file to the slide but nothing works.

Here’s the curious thing. In the original slide, under Flash Properties, it
shows the following path to the movie file:
C:\Documents and Settings\advmed\Desktop\PC_SWFs\Pangaea.swf

BUT, when I do a search (even with hidden, non-indexed, system files, etc.
included) there are no folders called “advmed†or “PC_SWFsâ€, OR a file called
“Pangaea.swf†on my system.

Even when I cut and paste this path from the older slide into the pptx
slide’s Flash Properties “Movie†cell, it still won’t run.

What is going on …..? ANY help will be appreciated.

Thanks!
Paul

thanks Steve - a BIG part of the problem is that I don't seem to have the
original flash file ... that's why I was searching that path for the file
name ... it doesn't exist on my system as a separate file. Is there any
way to "un-embed" the flash file from the older PPT slide and save it as a
flash file ....?

thanks,
paul

P.S. I checked the properties in the old slide with the flash animation,
and it DOES say Embed: True - so you were exactly right about what's
happening ... so, is there any way to "unembed" the flash file and save it
as a separate swf file ....?

thanks again,
paul

I did a quick experiment and tried a Web Page "Save As" with an embedded SWF
in a PPT in 97 - 2003 compatibility mode however it did not extract the SWF
as I thought it would. I then did it using the PPT2HTML application and it
did extract and save the SWF along with the other associated files created in
conversion. You can Google PPT2HTML and download a demo version. Check the
website for instructions on how to make changes necessary to support Flash
and convert your presentation. You should find the SWF in the folder created.

If you are not inclined to go through that, I'll have a go at it for you.
Save just the slide with the embedded SWF as a presentation - be sure to save
in 97 - 2003 Compatible format - and email it to me. I'll convert it and
should then be able to send you back the SWF. Email below...change the

THANKS Tom!!

I have taken you up on your offer and emailed a copy of the PPT file with
the embeded flash presentation. Hope you can work with it!

Good luck, and THANKS again!!!

Steve IS the PPT2HTML Big Kahuna and knows best on that suggestion I made. I
thought that I had moved the SWF I tested with but I'm not in that office now
and can't check. I'll look later and see what happens. There's got to be a
way to extract this thing.

Sigh. As you pointed out, I must have left the test SWF in it's original
location when I tested the PPT2HTML solution. Sigh.

Happy ending, though! Luckily, that SWF was able to be located so Paul is,
I think, good to go. LOL...I was ready to screen record it and get it that
way if I had to. There has got to be a way to easily extract an embedded
SWF, though, and in my spare time I'm going to keep trying to track that down.

Steve...I think I found what you were referring to when you said you thought
someone had previously found a solution. This page has the easiest step by
step process. I tried it with the PPT and embedded SWF that Paul had sent
and it works fine. I realize it could not work if the original PPT was saved
as a .pptx because the SWF would not really be embedded but it looks like a
solution when created in previous versions.
