flash drive + pix

G

Grampy Pete

I want to have more room on my pc so I did the following;
1-insert flash drive = removabe drive E
2-right click my pictures and click on send to - move down to removable
device E and left click.
3-all the pix should be in the removable device.
4-to verify the pix are in the E drive, I open my computer and double click
on E-removable device and the pix should open as they were in the my pix
folder.
5-if they are in the removable device I can then empty the my pix folder by
opening it and deleting the contents.
Any corrections appreciated.

This process should work to move the photos and verify that they
are moved; however, you should always keep important files on at
least *two* different storage devices to be safe from Murphy's
Law.

No correction. What you do is fine.

Just a suggestion. You can purchase an external drive and copy to it just as
easily as to a flash drive. Same procedure, but much more memory space
available than on a flash drive and when you look into it you will find this
a cheaper way.

I wondered at the cost of an external hard drive?

That would be an excellent way to save your photos--as long
as you have them on *both* an external drive and on another
drive--like the one in your computer. ;-)

It is pretty easy to add another drive to a desktop system.

On the other hand, if you have a laptop, the only real option
is upgrading the internal drive to a larger capacity, which
involves some data migration work--best to let the retailer
do it.

Can all computers take an external hard drive?

All compluters made in the last several years have
USB ports, and can be connected to a USB external drive.

If your OS is earlier than Windows XP, you may need to
install a driver (software) to use an external USB drive.

The persons pc that I am trying to help with is a laptop. I guess I have to
figure if a laptop can accept an external hard drive, a dvd writer then see
which is the better way to go.
Thank you for the continuing support.

If you can connect a flash drive to the USB port of this laptop you can
connect an external drive since they come ready to be connected via USB. If
this an older laptop and you have USB 1, this will be on the slow side (for
either a flash drive or external drive) but if USB 2 than the copying or
transfer of files will be fast.

Besides plugging into a usb port, are there any other things to do?
Thank you

Not if you have Windows XP or later--those OSs handle flash drive
installation automatically.

I think we were asking if external dvd-rw's could be plugged into usb ports
on my sp xp2 pc w/o any thing else to do like bios ,drivers etc. I hope after
I plug in, I get prompts that are ez to follow if anything at all.
