Flakey Windows Update

T

Terry

On a particular network I admin, there is a bldg with 10 workstations.
They are only used on weekends and I boot and test them each week before
they're needed. Three of them today gave me the shield showing the
recent updates. The rest did not. I even went to the WU site and it
showed no updates available.

Why isn't it consistent? All workstations have the updates configured
the same and are the same brand, etc. I also just realized the
workstation I'm using right now hasn't informed me of the updates either
this week.

Hi,

It's not flakey, the auto-update site will only acknowledge just so many
update requests at once to prevent server overload. The others will update
in time as their requests for updates are acknowledged.

So why when I manually go to the Windows Update site it still says no
updates are available?

Right, because the servers will not respond with a positive acknowledgement
until there is a free opening. You would be better off using the admin
options and download the updates as they are released, them push them out to
your administered machines.

I can see that with Auto Update, but not going to the site and checking
for updates. It should never respond telling a user that there are no
updates. That is giving misinformation. Better it should tell you,
"We're too busy for you now. Come back later"
