Fixing Corrupted file

On Starting Media player 9, it said extension of the file does not match the
format of the file. How do I play it back? it's a quite important file
(Codec Power pack installed)

It is a mp3 file. Some jerky sound when starting up. What's wrong?

Upgraded to Media Player 10 with no improvements.
The sound ticked once then stopped to silence. It had no problems before....
is it a bogus file?

Typically if you don't know what it is then you've downloaded it from a
peer-to-peer network and it's a bogus file.
