Fixboot command needed

Joe--Precisely what did you try? I'm hearing "tried those options" the same
way I have heard for 7 years "tried Safe Mode in XP: when people have in
fact tried one Safe mode option instead of the four they should try since
one may work. Did you try all 3 options 1) Startup Repair and 2) System
Restore after clicking into System Recovery Options from setup?

Every one of them on the Vista DVD menu including a couple of command line
options. I don't know how else to say 'all of them' other than to have
written each of them down in order to type them here. I even clicked the
one that says backup from a back-up source even though I didn't have Vista
backed up.

I also tried a command line option through XP using the Vista DVD without
any luck.

XP and 98SE were ok and I was still able to boot into each of those OSs. I
had lost the ability to boot to Vista because of a repair install of XP Pro
Retail, but that is fixed now because I reinstalled Vista.

Joe727:

I'm not being critical, but following this posting from the
beginning. This is the first time you mentioned doing a repair on the XP
installation. The repair eliminated the Vista boot and the only repair is to
reinstall Vista because XP is an earlier version and wouldn't recognize the
updated boot sector. Not knowing about the repair created the confusion.

IC - However, one of the respondents keeps mentioning XP. That is confusing
to me.

In any event, regardless of how the Vista boot loader got corrupted, it
needs to be fixed through Vista not XP. The only command I did not try was
the Vista equivalent of fixmbr.

Glad that you're back up and running.

Thanks - Vista is great. I figured I'd have to reinstall it, but it would
be nice to figure out how to fix the master boot record without having to go
that route.

Then again, maybe the fixboot part of Vista is not yet finished. Who knows?
