Fix for image problems

For those of you that are trying to fix the red "x" image
problem and have tried many of the so called fixes on this
newsgroup and on Microsoft Knowledge Base and yet you are
still unable to fix the problem just like I have...then
you may want to try this for it worked for me.

For the record: I am running Windows98 first edition.

After trying all the fixes without success, I simply
reinstalled my Windows 98 software. You don't have to wipe
out your hard drive. Just simply put in the Windows 98 CD
and find the file called 'setup.exe' and run it. It will
do a full install but it will not overwrite any drivers or
files that are newer than the one on the CD.

My problem is FIXED!

I do not know if this will work on XP, NT, ME, W2000 or
anyone other versions of Windows but if it does, please
post it on this site so that others like you will not have
to pick their brains in trying to fix the problem.

You're very welcome Eddie, I'm glad to hear that you found a solution for
the problem. Thank you for letting us know what helped fix it. I'm sure it
will help many others. It might be possible to clear the problem with a
Repair instead of a full reinstall. But, hopefully, you won't have this
problem again. Whew! <g>

Just be sure now to reinstall all the necessary Windows and IE updates and
patches, as a full reinstall usually requires that all the updates for each
be reinstalled.

after I reinstalled Win98, all programs are the lastest
with the exception of 3 updates. These are the 3 same
updates that I updated and began to have red "x" problems
thereafter. One could be a culprit. Nevertheless, I will
update them and IF I get the red "x" back, I WILL post it
here.

At least now you know, but, one more small suggestion. Add them one at a
time, and write down the name of each. Then reboot your computer after each
install and go through some steps to test it. If all seems ok, then do the
next one. At least, if it happens again, you'll know which one is the
guilty party. I know some updates can be a bane, and I've sure had my
share, especially with the IE6 SP1 install. There are a couple of MVP's
that helped me through that one just a couple of months ago, and they needed
a shot of Scotch more than I did (actually 2) when we got through, as it was
a real doozie to get installed and keep it from killing my system. <VBG>

I do believe that I have found the culprit. It's the
Q831167 patch. When I updated the patches as your
suggested, all was fine until I loaded this patch. But
here's the funny part. I uninstalled the patch Q831167 and
rebooted. All the red "x" problems were GONE but when I
looked at my add/remove install listing, I still see the
Q831167 as being loaded. One of two things are happening
here. Either the Q831167 HAS been REMOVED and yet the info
has NOT been removed, OR that it's possible that there
were two (2) Q831167 patches installed and one has been
removed. I don't know of the last one as being possible
but nevertheless, I am back to norm.

I emailed MS about my findings. It's quite possible that
this problem is a bit isolated and that those that do have
the red "x" problem may not be the same as mine.

For those of you that have tried all the fixes and yet it
had not resolve the red "x" problem, I would suggest to
check to see if they have Q831167 patch installed and if
so, remove that patch and see if your problem clears up.
If it does, you may want to avoid loading that back onto
your pc however be aware that the patch is a security hole
fix and you may be vunerable to hack attacks even though
the odds my be very slim that it will happen to you.
