Computer says database was damaged because access program was closed when the
database was still open...We need a way to access or read database if the
database file was damaged and the computer cannot repair it... is there
another way to open the access file?

Are you sure that was not "because the computer was shut down while the
database was still open?"

Hi Joseph,
Well I cannot be completely sure because the database is on a network but
this particular database was protected by a password, so I do not think it
likely. However we got further messages after trying to let the computer fix
the problem (unsuccessfully) that the password was not valid, so we logged in
as an administrator and took the password off and then were able to
temporarily get back into the database and make copies of it to a new
database and so ended up getting the data back as far as we can tell. I
think we solved the bigger problem but still wonder what could have happened
in the first place.
Thanks for your help!

Passwords do not stop users from shutting their computer off at 5:00 to
go home without properly closing all their programs. Programs open over a
LAN are more of a problem than the programs on their own machine. Also
Access databases that are not using a split system with a back end on the
server with the data and with front ends on each users own computer with all
the forms queries and reports are much more likely to suffer problems like
this and worse.

I suggest that you develop a back up system to protect you from the
almost certain crash. :-)
