First-time login to Outlook 2003 must be local or VPN

I've successfully enabled RPC over HTTP on our Exchange
2003 server and Outlook 2003. Users can use Outlook
without being connected to the LAN or using our VPN but
adding an Exchange connector during the setup of a
profile seems to require that they be connected locally
or through our VPN. In addition, the password change
form in Outlook 2003 fails if the user is connected via
RPC over HTTP. Our Exchange server is in a remote data
center and I would really like to avoid having to setup
all of our clients to be able to login to our VPN. Help.

Can you create a prf for the users? I was told that is how it was intended
for remote users. You can also try using a hosts file to help them make the
initial connection.
