I have a firwire adapter in the Card slot of a Dell Laptop.
The windows XP-Home sees the adapter care
ieee1394A, but does not see an external hard drive plugged into it, of
course with a firewire 6 to 6

Is there anything I have to do in windows to be able to access that drive?

Any ideas would be helpful at

A laptop is not likely to be delivering 12V at 1.5A to power
the Firewire bus. Chances are, the Firewire PCCard or Expresscard
you've installed, only connects the TPA+/- and TPB+/- data
lines. In other words, it has a four pin interface, even though
the connector shows six pins. Two of the pins could be open
circuit, and not connected to the cable.

That means, your external Firewire drive, should be using its
own power adapter. If you power the drive that way, then
perhaps it will work.

Check the documentation for your Firewire adapter card, as it may
tell you that it does not provide bus power.

If the Firewire external hard drive is using its own power adapter,
then there is some other kind of problem. Like, perhaps, a
damaged interface on the enclosure or on the adapter card.
