Firewire Networking PC to PC in XP

B

BTarver

I have two identical laptops, both with Windows XP Professional. Both
have built in Firewire ports. Both firewire ports work with other
devices (camcorders, drives, etc.)

No matter what I do, I can't get the machines to network via Firewire.
When I plug the machines in, they give an audible indication that
they "see" each other. When I unplug them from one another, they
confirm the disconnection. But I cannot see any drives or share any
data between the two machines.

I have run the network setup wizard with every possible option. Both
computers have unique names, both share the same workgroup, and both
have the appropriate files and folders shared.

I thought this XP Firewire networking was supposed to be easy! What
gives?

Now I can't even connect the two computers with an Ethernet crossover
cable -- I get the same results. The network cable appears to be
connected in XP, but no shared drives are visible.

Any thoughts?

Make sure that XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall is disabled
on the Firewire and LAN connections:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

Un-install all other firewall programs while troubleshooting.
