Firewire HD problems

I just bought an external 3.5" firewire case with a
Maxtor 120gb 8M 7200rpm HD. I can capture video onto the
drive no problem but when I go to play these files (I
tried opening with various media players) the red light
comes on the case but it just sits there forever. Even
small test files of 30sec, about 70mb, cause it to fail.
Ultimately my whole system needs rebooting everytime I
try to acess this drive. Basically I am only getting one
way data transfers in.

I have reinstalled Win XP Pro, and have SP1 also.
Ironically, XP never did recognize the drive when it was
plugged in. I had to go to Control Panel and then
Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management to get it
recognized and finally working as an NTFS drive.

I would be grateful for any advice. I have spent hours
troubleshooting.

in the device properties there is an option to optimize
for performance. this turns on the cache of the
drive...but you will need to stop the device before
removing it.
