firewire and ethernet

Is there a way to convert firewire to ethernet by using a
single cable? I've heard from some online users that this
is possible.
 
The protocols are pretty different so it couldn't be just a simple cable. I
would imagine that there are Ethernet NICs that plug into a Firewire cable
much like there are ones that attach to USB.
