Hi,

Hope you can help. Having had difficulty with Broadband
and a Firewall called Zone Alarm Pro I have now
discovered that they are incompatable with each other. I
keep getting the blue screen of death.

Can u suggest a decent Firewall that works well with
Windows XP.

Kind Regards
Peter Flint.

Not at all true.

I
keep getting the blue screen of death.

OK, but ZA is not the problem.

ZoneAlarm (Pro as well as the free version) works just fine with
XP. I have it installed on two computers here (running broadband)
and know and support many others where the combination works
without a problem. Look elsewhere for the source of your
problems.

Thanks Ken for the reply...

Having uninstalled Zone Alarm Pro and leaving it off the
machine Broadband has yet to give us any problems.

As soon as Zone Alarm Pro is installed the blue screen of
death appears after 3-5min.

Could you suggest where else I might look. If you think
that the problem is not with Zone Alarm Pro.

Peter Flint.

If it BSODs with ZA running, but not without it, there must be
some incompatibility between ZA and something else you're
running--perhaps some background program. If you want to
trouble-shoot this, I would check in MSCONFIG to see what's
running and try temporarily diabling each of them one at a time
and run ZA. If you can find some combination where it stays up
with ZA and without some other program, you've found the
conflict.

Another thought: I've seen problems between Norton Anti-Virus's
E-mail checking and ZA's E-mail Protection. If you run NAV and
have both of these enabled, try turning it off in ZA.

If you have turned ZA off, be sure to turn ICF on.

Norton is a very powerful program that can cause lots of
problems, friends of mine have quit using it, since other
programs do the same job and don't cause problems with other
software.

I agree with Mr. Blake. ZA Pro is an excellent firewall and should
not be interfering with your broadband connection I use ZA Pro and
broadband on my machine without any problem whatsoever.

Who is your provider? Is it a cable or telephone broadband
connection? Have you asked your provider's tech support for
assistance? You certainly do not want to get on the internet without
firewall protection. If you turn off ZA Pro and use your connection
you will almost positively pick up the Blaster Virus.

At least turn on the built in firewall in XP.

I have been using the firewall that is part of the V-COM system suite 5
package for some time with WIN 95/96/me/xp home/xp pro. Seems to work
very well with all the DSL services in this (socal) area and
supplements the hardware wall in routers with no problem. The entire
suite is well worth its cost (less than the same collection from Norton
or McAfee) and is as close to user useable as any I have tried.

I also have ZA & XP. I'm thinking your ZA is doing it's job properly. The blue screens are most likely caused by a system component that is getting blocked from lopping back to itself (127.0.0.1). Try uninstalling ZA, then reinstalling without using your previous security/firewall settings.
