I know virus protection has to be renewed annually to keep getting updates,
but is there a firewall out there that is a one time purchase? McAfee wants
$39.95 each year.
Thanks.

The free version of Zone Alarm (www.zonelabs.com) is quite adequate, and
gets updated now and again. The pay-for Pro version (which stays out in
front on updates) is $29.95 for two years

BTW, the free version of AVG6 (www.grisoft.com) is a quite effective
anti virus, and is updated every week or so - depending on how many
critical additions come along

XP has a free firewall built in. See 283673 HOW TO: Enable or Disable
Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP
