OS Vista Ultimate SP2
Firewall Zone Alarm 8.0.298.000 free edition

I have random slow bootups that I have traced to the Zone Alarm file
VSMON.EXE I would like to replace Zone Alarm with another Firewall.

I would like to hear your suggestions for another free firewall
replacement. Please advise.

How about the built-in Windows one? If you're behind a NATS router, that's
all you need...

Yeah, I was thinking about that. But ZA asks if a program wants to
connect to the Internet. I didn't think that the Windows FW did that.
BTW, I am behind a router.

Why do you feel that is important?

Windows firewall doesn't do that.

Think about it: if something "bad" has gotten in, then it's probably
way too late to worry about it getting back out... right?

Use the built-in firewall and find something else to worry about.

Don't you want to know if some program from your computer is trying to
connect to the Net?? Many times a program being used within the PC is
trying to connect even though the connection was not necessary and with
ZA I could refuse the connection. Of course, you wouldn't know that a
connection was being attempted if your FW doesn't advise you of same.

Unfortunately a lot of the folks around here have a theory that you
only need to know what MS thinks you need to know.

Remove ZA, activate the Vista firewall and install this:
http://sphinx-soft.com/Vista/index.html
(free version available)
http://sphinx-soft.com/Vista/order.html
Now you can see which programs want to go out.
Thanks Fred. I'll check it out. Maybe that is the answer.

i don't advise anyone to use the firewall from windows,

That is a personal opinion and shouldn't be given as advice.
There is nothing wrong with Windows Firewall if you cooperate.
It seems to be doing just fine on my machine with no need for 'extras'.

Your illiterate post and your lack of credentials means that the
chances are slim that your advice will be followed.

That's only because you haven't bothered learning to use it.

Vista's built-in Windows Firewall is adequate for most users, but
not particularly easy to configure. Vista's built-in firewall, although
superior to that of WinXP, is of a rudimentary nature, intended to meet
the simpler needs of most home consumers (or business/enterprise clients
already ensconced behind more advanced perimeter defenses).

One 3rd-party add-on (Sphinx's Vista Firewall Control
http://sphinx-soft.com/Vista/) might make the Vista Firewall a bit more
useful to you, but nothing but a completely independent product will be
able to provide the detailed control you want.

There are two interfaces for Vistas built-in firewall:

1) A simplified one accessed through the Control Panel that is the only
one most people see.

2) And the more advanced "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security
(WF.msc)," accessed via the Start Menu's Administrative Tools folder,
for the experienced user who wants better control.

i used also zonealarm some while ago, now
i use firewall with antivirus from bitdefender and i'm satisfied.

That's fine, but it comes down to persoanl preference, doesn't it?
i

It's well-regarded by many.

Here, I'd have disagree, completely. I don't think any security
"suite" is a good choice. It'd be much better to use smaller,
less-resource-draining stand-alone products.
