Hi Karen,
well - my english is not the very best - so sorry for failures or mistakes...
Well I didn't have this problem in the beginning with the xp firewall, but I was trying anything to get this straightened out.
okay - you used the XP Firewall in the beginning without problems.
As for using another type of firewall, we have tried several but when trying to configure them we could do it and still use my wireless network system between my computer running xp and my daughters running 98.
So you have tried other firewalls but they are not longer active or installed - okay.
You have wireless lan - a 'Home'-Network between you and your daughters computer.
Have you a direct connection between your computer and your daughters?
I mean do you "go" PC to PC directly or is there another hardware component 'between' for the network traffic - like a wireless lan router (for also the 'dial-in internet connection'). Is the IP of the Router the one you are not able to change?
The changing IP address i ment was the one you get as you dial in into the internet - this will be each time you connect a different even though your IP address in your Home-Network is not changing. The router may "change" the address for you - this is called NAT, Network Address Translation, sorry for this but this also may be another point of failure. Even the router may have a hardwarefirewall which must be configured correctly...
As foris there another firewall running I can't find any other stuff with a firewall to it. It has just started since I installed some of the last windows security updates. The only thing is is that I can't figure out which update has caused this.
Perhaps you will now find another firewall (see above)...
But you say you didn´t have problems so far. After updating the problems begun.
Have you updatet to ServicePack 2 before the official release - a 'release candidate', or is - i don´t know where you life - there the official SP2 released yet and you have installed it - Microsoft will activated the firewall as default and will make it more safe - meaning even less ports and protocols open - maybe this is the problem now..?
Since I am using a wireless network I'm really limited in trying to get another IP address because I would have to take the computer in to the shop and have them reset it and I don't have the money right now to do that.
No problem for that - we talked from different IP addresses i think (see above).
I connect through dial-up connection and none of the hardware has a firewall with it and it was running fine til recently and I have added no new hardware.
okay, i beleave you - but maybe there is a NAT or Firewall you don´t know of before.
Maybe you could tell me even more details, see my questions and my comments.
kind regards
Dirk
