firewall not working

i had downloaded the xp pack with the firewall, not sure which one it was
(you know it, let me know) it worked great, then brilliant me, thought i
would try the mcafee firewall, which in turn turned off the xp firewall, i
deleted the mcafee, and now i can't get the xp wall back on, it keeps
telling me that it can not start the firewall/internet connection sharing
service... everyone keeps telling me i don't really need it since i'm on
dial up, but i feel more comfortable with it. i have fought with it for 2
days and tried everything i have read. If you have any soulitions or
answers why it is doing that, please i would love the help.

You should use a Firewall even on dial-up. But you shouldn't run two at the
same time as they can conflict with each other.

XP/SP2 Firewall only protects incoming, where other programs protect
outgoing as well.

XP may be good enough for you depending on what you access your computer
with. You can get Zone Alarm, or Sygate free if you want. Both protect
incoming and outgoing.

When you say 'delete', do you mean you properly uninstalled it from the 'Add
& Remove Programs' tool, or just deleted the directory under your program
files?

Hopefully you didnt do the latter because that will not effectively remove a
program. There are several files that Mcafee puts in other folders
(particularly the system folder) and those files might be interfering with
the Windows firewall.

If you did do the latter, reinstall the program and then re-uninstall it.
That should remove everything and give windows free reign.

And contrary to 'everyone', dial-up does not mean you are by any means safe.
A firewall is still a good idea and you should be proud that you felt the
need to keep it on.

the only thing i have in my add remove section now is mcafee security center,
and mcafee visrus scan--- i run mcafee virus, should i just un intall all of
it and and then go reinstall my virus protector???? i will be the first to
admit i know nothing about computers, so if you would like you can email

Are there any relevant messages in Event Viewer? To run it, click
Start | Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative

As other people have said, you definitely need a firewall on a dial-up
connection. I've seen a computer attacked within 10 seconds of
establishing a dial-up connection.

Hi Lisa,

To know which Service Pack you are running now, right click My
Computer/Properties. On the General Tab top right it will list your Service
Pack last.

As for the Service, go to Start/Run: services.msc and scroll down to
Windows Firewall. Double click it and set it to Automatic, Apply. Then
Start the Service, Apply, ok.
