Computer Club member just brought in a computer.
Windows XP SP 3 plus all others.

He uninstalled Trendmicro Internet Security Pro. Attempted to reinstall, but
came up with an error message. Referred to TrendMicro site which offered a
program to "fix" things. The fix didn't fix and couldn't repair to complete
the install. The member thereupon installed AVG Free.

The Windows Firewall upon boot seems to be be working, but upon completion
of but up the firewall is shut off.

When attempting to turn the firewall on, the following message if presented:

Could not start the Windows Firewall.

I went to to Services and located the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS) service. Could not start. The message offered: "...Could not
start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service on the
local computer.
Error 10047: An address incompatible with the registered protocol was
used...."

Any thoughts?

Didn't know, but thought I'd hit Google just to educate myself. Zip, zilch,
nada.

On the other hand, there were plenty of hits with the word "requested"
instead of the "registered" you quoted, Googling thusly:

"xp firewall error 10047 "an address incompatible with the registered
protocol was used""

Did you look through any of the helpful sites in these results first?
