firewall and file sharing

I have 2 PCs with WIN XP Pro connected to a ADSL router/hub. The Router has
its own built in firewall.

If I have WIN XP's own firewall enabled on both PCs - I can't do any file
sharing. SO everytime I want to share files between the 2 machines I have
to disable the firewall. Is there a simpler way to just let these 2
machines communicate?

Did you try enabling the File and Printer Sharing exception on both computers?
And check the Scope of the exception (Edit - Change scope).

Thanks Chuck,

I went into the settings for firewall. I don't have SP2 for XP.

But if TCP 139 and 445 and UDP 137 and 138 are opened - then is that as bad
as disabling the IC Firewall?

It seems that ports 139 and 445 are the most vulnerable to damage from
hackers.

John,

That's very true. Which is why layered security, including an outer layer that
does NOT permit those ports either way, is essential.

But, if you don't have SP2 yet, you're lacking in a few security issues.
Windows Firewall is one of them.
