firefox... good browser?

Just wondering about firefox.

Can I have IE and Firefox installed at the same time? What about
emailing in firefox, does it have a 'outlook express' type of thing?

Is firefox better? faster?

I use an XP pentium4.

Apreciate your opinion.

thanks

You can run Firefox and IE at the same time. No conflict.
Firefox is a replacement for IE.
Thunderbird is a replacement for OE.

As far as faster, I think its a dead heat. I think its more a *feel*
and *feature* issue than it is a speed issue.

Since FF & IE work side by side, load it and try it. You can always
remove it.
Since TB & OE work side by side, load it and try it. Just set in TB
the "leave a copy of mail on server" setting so you can pull the mail
into OE also. That way if you toss TB you'll still have all your mail.

FF when loaded should import all your IE bookmarks.
Not sure if Thunderbird will import mail from Outlook Express?
Someone else might have an input.

Yes, ThunderBird has an import function for Outlook Express mail. Haven't
used it though so I can't comment on its abilities.

You can have many browsers installed, and run them all simultaneously,
if you want. No one browser cares what others are doing at the time.
Firefox (Mozilla) has an email/newsreader client named Thunderbird. Two
things I prefer with Thunderbird over OE:

1. If your account goes south, you don't lose all your emails, address
book, and settings till you repair or recreate the account. At least I
haven't seen that happen with Thunderbird, and it has happened a few
times with OE.

2. One email rule allows you to divert all emails from those not in your
address book. You don't have to update this every time someone is added
to the address book. You do have to create a new rule for each addition
with OE. Outlook works similarly to Thunderbird in this respect.

Yes. You can not only have both installed, you can run both at the
same time.

I'm not a Firefox expert, but I believe that Thunderbird is usually
considered to be its "'outlook express' type of thing."

That's like asking whether a Ford is better than a Chevrolet.
Different people have different opinions. I prefer IE to Firefox, but
Maxthon, which is actually a shell running on top of IE, to either.

Try them all, and decide for yourself which *you* like best. Nobody
else's opinion matters.

I couldn't disagree more about it being a dead heat when it comes to speed. I
have found FF to be much faster than IE. I am not sure if FF has all the
security advantages of IE, but that's the trade off. I use them both but I
will use FF if I am in a hurry or feeling impatient.

Firefox is open source so gets lots of free goodies.

This helps for people who are visually impaired.
Fonts can be made larger for IE webpages or OE mail.

But I think only Firefox and Thunderbird allow for
the customization of larger File, Edit, View, etc.
menu bars and their drop down menu lists. All of
it can be made bigger and bolder, not just part.

Firefox will cause your cat to develop warts. If you don't have a cat, you
should be okay.

As for Thunderbird, do you own a canary?

Hi Botti,

Here is an excellent flash video showing you
the new features of Firefox 3. It takes about
three minutes:

http://people.mozilla.com/~beltzner/overview-of-firefox3.swf

I love Firefox and have spread it across two
counties and Windows, Linux, and Apple. Firefox's
main problem is that its programmers left out Active X
support, which is a HUGE SECURITY HAZARD and is not
platform independent. So, some of the older web site
that have not updated their code won't work. But, not
worry, FF has a plugin that will allow you to run a
single IE window inside FF:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

And, Firefox is considerably faster that IE. feels
like about 50% faster

On the Thunderbird front, you can download a plugin
called lightning that will give you a calendar:

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/releases/lightning0.8.html

And, TH is considerable more secure that OE. TH
will not "auto execute" viruses just by downloading them.
But, you are still vulnerable to human engineering viruses
(ones with a sob stories that tricks you into manually installing
them).

And, the Mozilla Foundation pays a bounty for
security bugs. They get fixed very, very rapidly.

If you need more help, their is an excellent newsgroup
for Firefox and Thunderbird over on news.mozilla.org

HTH,
-T
