Firefox crash

Today I was surfing and closed one window too many. When I tried to reopen
Firefox I got a message saying that the default was already being used and I
had to either start a new identity or rename. I renamed and when the
browser started up it was as if I had just downloaded a new one. Everything
was gone, my bookmarks and settings.
Can anyone tell me why this would suddenly happen?

IIRC that was a common probem with early Firefox versions. Check the
Mozilla forums.

A common problem. Open Task Manager and shutdown Firefox.exe.

After all of this I just did the latest update.
I've been using Firefox for the past few years and this is the first time
I've had any problems. I keep updating and was using the latest before the
current update-1.5.0.1
