firefox changes my font properties

I understand that different browsers will change the appearance of my web
page when it comes to layers etc. But why does text become underlined in
Firefox when it is not underlined in IE? The site is not published so I
can't give you a URL.

Because of the code that you have used on your page. We would need to see
that to answer any further.
