"FIND" GETS STUCK in footnotes

The "find" utility gets stuck in footnotes and endnotes.

Say I am searching for word "X." I can go from X to X just fine, until an X appears in a footnote. Then I can only find X in subsequent footnotes. Any X after the first footnote that has one cannot be reached. Is there a way around this?
 
If you keep searching all the way through the footnotes, does it eventually
go back to your main text?

What version of Word are you using, on what OS?

I believe normal behavior (my MacWord 2001) is for F&R to go all the way
through the main text, then to search all the notes from the beginning.
