find and replace special characters

Often I cut and paste portions of documents from the web or from a PDF file
into a word document in order to format it to print fewer pages. Very often
the source contains a special character at the end of a line - the backward
P looking character that I think means "new line". How can I remove all of
those characters so the the paragraphs will allign to the width of the page
instead? I don't know how to input that character into the 'find and
replace' tool. I've tried! The is a section in the find and replace window
that lists special characters but the backwards P isn't included - I've
looked at them all. I can manually remove them one at a time with the
delete key but that takes too long. I would be very happy to find out how
to remove the character. I hope someone can tell me.
