financial statements

I am using Word 2000. I am trying to type financial statements. In '98 I
used to type the figures with a righ justified tab with a space after
positive numbers and no space after bracketed numbers. When printed the
numbers were then right justified (and the closing bracket was in the next
space). This doesn't work in '2000 - how should I be doing this?

Use a decimal aligned tab.

You should use a decimal tab stop. This aligns numbers on the first
nonnumeric character (aside from the thousands separator), which can be a
decimal point, the place where a decimal point would be, a bracket
(parenthesis), an asterisk, letter, etc.
