FINAL FANTASY XI Installation Issue: Network Connections Icons Vanish

The problem:

When we installed Final Fantasy XI on our PC running
Windows XP home edition, the network connections icons disappeared,
and the network setup wizard stopped working.

I tried all the steps suggested on the microsoft site, but nothing helped.
I reinstalled Windows XP. That didn't help either. After much searching
on the web, I found the answer at the below gamers forum:

(Thank you casio91! Thank you thank you thank you!)

In case that posting disappears, and so that other people sharing the
same problem can easily find the answer, I'm posting it here with lots of
relevant keywords to make it easy to find on the web. (So you don't go
through the same week of misery I did):

The solution:

In the network connections folder, right-click on the LAN icon. Select
properties. The Local Area Connection Properties window will appear.
Under "This connection uses the following items:"
check the box for "QoS Packet Scheduler". Click the "Uninstall"
button. The network connection icons should pop back up.

Here are a bunch of keywords about this problem to make this page easy
to find for other sufferers:
