FilterKeys too long

My wife has Parkinson's, and has a trouble with getting
double keystrokes. I've tried to enable the FilterKeys
Accessibility feature to ignore double keystrokes for
her, but this creates more problems than it solves.

The problem is that the feature uses a pull-down list
with limited timing options. One-half second being the
shortest interval it will accept. In order to
intentionally type the same letter twice, she must pause
at least .5 seconds between key presses. Typing 'www',
for example, becomes quite tedious. The computer is
frustrating enough, and she has now turned off this
feature.

It would seem to me that this feature should accept finer
adjustments. A shorter filtering period would catch her
inadvertent double keystrokes, while still allowing her a
natural keyboard experience.

Does anyone know of an alternative to the built-in
Accessibility FilterKeys that would provide for double
character filtering?

Thanks
