filter mode status

At times when i am using the auto filter mode for my data,
at the lower left end corner, excel gives me the status
say for e.g "displaying 73 rows of 100 rows." however in
some other worksheets or some other times..it simply
mentions "filter mode".

Can some body plz help me how to get the actual status
rather than only get the "filter mode" msg. there.
