fill series and protection

When cells are unlocked and the sheet is protected, the 'fill series'
command is not available
Can anybody help?
I need to protect the sheet against misuse but allow all users to use
the fill down mode for date entries
 
You could unlock the column where the dates are to entered and just drag/copy
to fill down that column.

I.e. Unlock column A then protect the sheet.

Enter a date in A1 then left-click on the bottom-right corner of A1 and drag
down. The dates will increment.

If the fill pattern is different than one day at a time you can enter the date
in A1 and in A2 enter e.g. =A1+7 to get every 7th day. Then copy down.

If using XL 2002(XP) there are a host of options with sheet protection. Check
them out.
