what programme do I use to open .dbx files

Hi Steve, these files are used by outlook express and contain such things as
your received email, your sent email etc. Leave them alone.

Outlook Express. Click file/import/messages and point to the file.

Usually in Windows systems it is Outlook Express mailbox folder file.
