I'm at a complete loss to figure what the problem might be here and
would welcome any help.

Firstly, I've been running XP for quite some time now without any
particular problems. However, in the last month or two something
strange has started to happen.

For example, I use a program called ACDSee as a graphics file user and
have used the same program for many years. It is usually very fast at
displaying graphic files. Now, however, if I start in a folder with say
about 50 jpg graphic files in and start double clicking them in order to
display them maybe the first 10 are fine and then the next one takes 20
- 25 seconds to display. It seem to be completely random though.
Either the picture displays instantly or there is this huge wait.

I also tried the same procedure with a number of Word documents and the
same thing is happening - either the document is opened up in Word
virtually instantly or there is this 20 second wait.

Now, around the time this problem began I noticed that I had installed
Norton Antivirus 2004 (or rather upgraded it from 2003). I also read
reports on the internet that there had been reports of it slowing
certain things down so I have completely uninstalled it. The problem
still remains though.

So, in sumary, it doesn't seem to be specifically connected to the file
type, as I have the same problem with both Word documents and jpg
graphic files and I suspect maybe other file types too. Everything else
appears to be fine. Any suggestions as to what may be wrong?

.
See what programs you have running in the background.
Hve Taskmanager opened and to the side somewhere when you
clk on a pic. Look at Performance and Processes. That
might give you some idea as to what is going on. Good luck

I've already done that - nothing going on at all - system idle. I don't
think it's not a performance issue.
