Files replace one another

Hi there. I think that I changed something in my Word 2003 settings so that
now I can only have one file open at a time. For example, if I open apple.doc
and then want to open pear.doc the latter replaces the former.

I'd like to be able to open multiple Word files at once. If anyone knows how
to change this I'd be very grateful. Thanks so much

Sounds as if you only need to select Tools > Options > View tab and turn on
"Windows in Taskbar".

If the option is turned on, you will see an icon on the Windows taskbar for
each open window in Word.

If the option is turned off, you will see only one Word icon in the Window
taskbar – representing the active document. Note, however, that your
documents are still open – all open documents are listed in the Window menu
in Word and you can switch between them from there.

So I'm pressing my luck now but...do you know if there is a way to open
multiple files in one document so that they are all visible at once?

Well, a document _is_ a file so I'm assuming that you want to see 2 document
windows at the same time. There are at least a couple of options:

If you have 2 or more documents open you can use Window> Arrange All, or

If you have 2 docs open you can use Window> Compare Side by Side With (the
other filename). If more than 2 docs are open the command will read as
Compare Side by Side With... And it will produce a list of open files from
which to select the second doc.
