I have a problem that just started happening. A partition on one of my
computers is shared. This partition contains all kinds of stuffs, my movies,
music and my documents etc. The whole drive is shared and the option to let
other users edit my files is checked. The strange thing that just started
happenin recently is that users can no longer access any files or folders
except "my music" (music files), "fraps" (captured video), and "cdkeys -
world of warcraft" (3 saved e-mails from OE). When I try to open various
files in root in ie, a photoshop file, it says the file is locked or in use.
If I try to open a folder I get this message:
--
\\Optiplex\Data (G)\foldername is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions.

Access is denied.
--
If I try to drag a file over from it to the current computer, I get this
message:

--
Cannot copy filename: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not
currently in use.
--
I can drag over ANY folder over just fine, just not files in root.

Why did this all of a sudden start happening, how can I prevent it, and how
can I change it back to "normal".

And by normal, I mean, no permission errors etc etc.

Thanks

ps. the whole drive g:\ is shared with full read/write/delete, and non of
the folders within are specifically shared.

Can you disable a Simple file sharing? Sounds like recent XP security patch
made something.

Robert,

please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.

One point is that for sharing other than simple file sharing to
work you need two separate permissions, one for the share and
one for each object (file, folder) you want to share. You may
have to check and modify the latter permissions.

The "hosting" computer is XP Pro, but I've never enabled classic file
sharing or created any power users. All of those settings are pretty much
default. This all just started happening, like I said, all a sudden with no
changes to my network settings on either computers.

Robert,

the object permissions have nothing directly to do with
networking. They are more general. I would say that it can't
hurt to check them, because it looks as if they could be the
cause, even if you don't know who or what might have changed
them.

Right-click on a folder (or file) and check its security
settings. Check who is allowed to read it.
