In Word or any other of the Office applications, if I go to Open and then
select Word Documents in the "files of type" drop down, the window still
displays all of the flies and does not limit the slection to just Word
Documents or Excel Documents if I am in Excel, etc. Is there a selection or
preference that I need to set so that I can use the "files of type" feature.
This happens on both of my computers running XP Pro.

Hi Robert,

You didn't mention the version of Word or Windows you're using, but if you select 'Word Document' in Word 2007 there are 12 file
types that included as files that Word can edit.

If you select a single file type, such as Word 97-2003 document (.doc) what other file types are you seeing?

I am running XP Pro and Word 2003. When I select Word Document in the pull
down, everything in My Documents, including folders is displayed. There
seems to be no filtering at all. This happens on both my laptop and desk
computer. The laptop is running the same software configuration.

You will always see folders - only files are filtered and I don't know of
any setting that affects it. Can you give an example of a file type you see
that is not a document.
