Files not listed alphabetically in Explorer and File Open windows

For some reason, the list of files in a directory displayed by Explorer or a
File Open command in all software are no longer alphabetized. I have Windows
XP SP2.

In Explorer the directories in the left hand window pane are alphabetized
but not those in the right hand directory window.

If I select "Arrange icons by" and select Name, the directoy window becomes
properly alphabetized.

Why aren't the folder and file names listed alphabetically in directory
windows?

This did not used to be a problem.

Sorry, this post has already been answered below. I had trouble logging in
