Files missing on Vista Computer

Hi all - I used FrontPage 2003 to generate a web-based CD. I made the CDs
using a Dell Windows XP computer, and tested them on the XP, a Windows 95 and
a Vista computer. It worked fine on the XP and 95, but some of the files
gave an error message on the Vista. In looking at the directories, there
were 3 directories that appeared empty (even after turning on the "show
hidden files") on the Vista, but they were chock full of files on both the XP
and the 95 computers. The CDs were write once. I also tried publishing the
site on an R/W DVD, but got the same results. I tried shortening file names,
making new directories and copying the "missing" files into them and deleting
the old directories and nothing worked. I even copied some of the "missing"
files into the directories that showed files, republished, and then those
directores appeared empty. Any help? My next step will be to install
FrontPage on my Vista computer to see if that makes a difference. Any bets
on that? Any help will be greatly appreciated! (I even took the CD to "The
Geek Squad" and they tried it on several computers with the same results.)

What was the error message? What were the folders?

You are just copying the files? Did you try to copy the files / folders in
the website that did not copy?

A little more info - installed FrontPage on the Vista computer. Tried to
copy the website from the CD, got the following error message: "Server error:
The server extensions were unable to access the file
"E:\_vti_pvt\service.lck". Please check the file permissions."

Error message "Cannot find 'file:///E:/Docs/Final_Report.pdf". Make sure the
path or Internet address is correct. "

Yes, I originally copied and pasted the files into the directories I had
made in FrontPage -- the missing files that I had copied are all pdfs, jpgs,
and there is one ppt. I did some photo stuff using FrontPage, and it
generated some "thumbs" files, which are also among the missing on Vista (but
not XP or 95). If I put all the files in the root directory should that help?

Anytime you place files on a CD, they become read-only. You have to copy the files/folders to your
HD, then remove the ready-only attributes.

However, you FP web really need to be published between locations (computer / folder / etc.)

It works! It works! It works! Thank you! I changed all the folders/files
so that they were not read only nor hidden and copied them to the Vista
computer. I installed FrontPage on the Vista computer and published the site
to a CD. And it works on the Vista computer and on my XP computer. It
doesn't, however, work on the Windows 98 computer. Is there anyone else left
out there who has a '98?
Thanks again,
H.

Postscript - still doesn't work when made on XP computer--even with the files
& folders not "read only" and "hidden". What is really puzzling is that some
folders and files are fine, and others aren't. I guess MS has it planned for
all our existing products to be obsolete--I'll now have to use the Vista
computer if I want to make CDs that can be read on Vista computers.

Copying a FP web between locations will not work in most cases, as the FP hidden file and related to
the machine the copy was from. You really need to be able to publish the site to the new machine
from either the old machine or from a live/remote server that has the FP extensions.

You should, as long as you can publish to an IP address or Machinename.
