Files and Settings Transfer (FAST) Wizard Problem, Help?

G

Guy

I am having trouble with the FAST Wizard. I hit several websites and
found none that address my problem:

I bought a new hard drive, installed it as master, and installed XP
Home. I then switched back to the original master HD (with XP Home
SP2) to transfer my files (using FAST Wizard) from one drive to
another. I created the data file then switched the cables so that the
new HD was again the master drive.

Everything worked until I tried to import. I pointed the FAST wizard
to the data folder but the wizard "could not find" the 1.6 GB file in
the folder!

Both drives are working; I updated the new install to SP2 with the
latest updates and tried again, no success.

Any ideas? TIA,

1. After you have installed XP and your programs, open the
Files & Settings Transfer Wizard and select "New Computer".
2. Select "I don't need the Wizard Disk......"
3. Browse to your hard drive and locate the "USMT2.UNC" file.
4. Your Files and Settings will begin installing on the new drive.

Note:

The .DAT file within the USMT2.UNC folder should be named IMG00001.DAT
There should also be a file named "status". If you have these two files within
the USMT2.UNC folder, you should only browse to the "USMT2.UNC" folder
when using the wizard.

==> Make sure your IMG00001 file is properly named: IMG00001.DAT

You need to browse to the location of the "USMT2.UNC" folder. Do not browse
to or select the IMG00001.DAT file, only the USMT2.UNC folder itself.

For example, my location is: C:\Old Computer Files\Transfers\USMT2.UNC

If Carey's suggestion is not the answer then here is another possibility. If
only one of the computers has KB896344 from Windows Updates installed then
the transfer won't work. It has to be uninstalled from that computer or
installed on the other computer. You may have to run the wizard again after
doing this.

Any ideas? TIA,

I find that the FASTW likes to have an additional folder in the path
when importing the saved data.

What I always do is to create a new folder named Transfer in the root
directory of the drive and then tell FASTW to save the data there. It
then creates its own USMT2.UNC subfolder within it. When importing
the data I always point FASTW to the Transfer folder and it always
finds the data and imports it correctly.

Good luck
