~$filename "ghost" files and Normal.doc file

Hi, I have 2, possibly related, issues.

1. I have about 20 "ghost" files in one of my word folders. These are files
that are very pale and all start with ~$filename or are .tmp files. My
question is, what exactly are these (old versions of files?), why is it
saving them in the first place, and do I need them (i.e. can I delete them
without problems with my existing, normal files).

2. I often get requests pertaining to "the Normal.doc files has been
changed. Do you want to save the changes?" What is going on there? Is this
related to the fact that I am often asked to save changes to files I had
prior to putting the laptop into sleep mode?

Thank you so much for your help.

cheers,
