ok i know this question may sound stupid but i am new to all this somputer
stuff. here it goes, i have an older computer that ha some files on it that i
need but it doesn't have cd dvd burner to were i can burn data to and the
just use it on my new computer. i was told that i could transfer the data by
conecting both modems together with a usb cable. i already did that but still
can not get it to work. If there is someone that could help me with this i
would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Gabby,

If both PCs have USB ports I'd buy a USB flash drive. You can pick up a
decent sized one for next to nothing now:

Get a USB flash drive if it has USB, or take the hard drive out from the old
computer, install it in the new one as a slave drive, and copy the files.

That depends on the operating system and the type of hardware. If you can
give more info on the older machine it would help.

A null modem cable (serial) can transfer data from one PC to another using
software and the afore mentioned cable. If you have a NIC (network adapter
card) in both you can network the two together via Peer to Peer and simple
share the folders that you want to transfer to/from. NIC to NIC is done
using a CAT-5 crossover cable, which you can purchase at any computer store
cheaply.

CAT-5 crossover cable:

In this manner a Windows 98 PC and a Windows XP PC can communicate.

it might be easier just
to take out the old drive
and install it a slave/secondary
harddrive on your newer pc.

then you can access the old
data via explorer on your new pc.

ps: you can recycle what's
left of the old pc on next earth day.

Google these concepts to learn more about them: network card, network chip,
network cable, cross over cable (special kind of cable for 10 mbit), patch
through cable for 1000 mbit, file transfer software, or windows networking.

Then check if your computer has a network card or network chip and connector
on the back or front or sides of your computer case ;)
