I have recently reinstalled Windows XP on my home PC after suffering
inexplicable crashes and, before commencing, used the "File & Settings
Transfer Wizard" to back up my files etc onto a DVD. After completing the
reinstall and attempting to restore the backup files I get a message telling
me: "the location that you specified does not contain stored information"
when pointing the wizard to the USMT2.UNC folder. If I try the Root
directory I get the message: "Insert disk 1" and clicking OK gives the
message "Disk inserted is not the correct one". The USMT2.UNC folder
contains 877MB in 2 files -'status' ( 1kb) and 'IMG00001.DAT' (898,310kb) so
the files must be there!

Can anyone tell me if there is any way top access the "dat" file to extract
the files. I am desperate as all my digital photos are in here!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am desperate!

Copy the USMT2.UNC folder to your hard drive
and browse to that folder.

The .DAT file within the USMT2.UNC folder should be named IMG00001.DAT
There should also be a file named "status". If you have these two files within
the USMT2.UNC folder, you should only browse to the "USMT2.UNC" folder
when using the wizard.

==> Make sure your IMG00001 file is properly named: IMG00001.DAT

You need to browse to the location of the "USMT2.UNC" folder. Do not browse
to or select the IMG00001.DAT file, only the USMT2.UNC folder itself.

For example, my location is: C:\Old Computer Files\Transfers\USMT2.UNC

I have already tried doing as you suggest and I can copy the file to my hard
drive or to a USB memory stick but I still get the same message every time I
try ti resatore files!

Try downloading KB896344 from MS Update - Custom downloads and then use FAST.
It worked for me.

I am having the same problem. ie Transfer wizard does not recognize my DVD
Disc 1 and asked me to put in correct disc. My Computer does not list the
files on any of the 3 discs. It did before I reinstalled windows.
It does read ordinary CDs.
Can anyone help??

These symptoms suggest the drive now is defective and
should be replaced (or you can add a DVD drive and reserve
this one for CDs.)
