File Splitter w/Auto Join

B

Bill Rowland

Been looking for the past few days, for a FREEWARE, file splitter that has
the ability to make joining of files automatic. I've found (literally) dozens of
programs that do it with a BAT file or a Special EXE file.

What I'm looking for is a splitter that will incorporate the re-joining part
into the first archive. NOT a separate program or BAT file. Anyone know of one?

Thank you for the reply. But, that was the last program I tried. Does a great
job. I either missed something or this program makes a "disk001.exe" file that
is (approximately) 73 KB in size and that's the "file" that you run to put the
other "pieces" back together. maybe I missed something in the instructions?

Thank you for the reply.

That isn't what you want? The exe is one of the pieces - the first. IOW, the re-joining part has been put into the first archive as you requested. It's size (and that of all others) is dependent upon the size for the pieces set by you in the program.

That's what I thought too. But when I split my first "big" file (186 MB) into
10 MB chunks it produce 19 files!?? With one small (73 KB) EXE file to put them
all back together. The program said that it would produce 18 files, but it
produced 19!! That confused me. Not sure that's a bug or not! Could be me not
knowing how to operate the program.

But, I read all the documentation that came with it. Everything that's
documented seems to imply that there will be "X" number of files, and that's
true! BUT, when I use the unite feature it produces one more file.

The reason for this requirement is simple. These files will be put on a
server for downloading by anyone needing these files. I can't put them on the
server and then have them go some place else for a "program" to put them back
together. I'm desperately trying to observe the K.I.S.S. principal here.

Why? Because I have NO IDEA who will need or download these files. The
"knowledge" level of the person or persons downloading these files is unknown.
It could be anyone for a real computer literate person to and absolute "rock".
More than likely they won't have a clue on how to put these files back together.
So I'm trying to make it as simple as possible, for them not me.

If you know different I'd really appreciate the information on what I'm doing
wrong.

You can't split 186 MB into 18 files of 10 MB each...you will be short 6 MB. Ergo the 19th file. Plus, the sum total of the parts will always exceed the original size...gotta include code in the exe toput stuff back together.

I'm confused...when you unite X files you wind up with one file. The original.

Or maybe you meant to say split rather than unite? In that case, clicking the Split Options tab and checking "Merge the first piece with the Self-Uniting Executable file" will give you X number of files, the exe being in the first part.

Why do you want to split them in the first place? If they have to d/l 186 MB they are going to have to do so whether the file is whole or split into parts.

You could name the exe "Install.exe" or "Click Me.exe" or "Join.exe". You could explain what is necessary on the site. You also have the option in GSplit to give messages/instructions when the exe is clicked.

I understand what you are saying but you can only dumb things down so far. At some point, people will simply have to learn how to do rudimentary things.

I can't see that you are doing anything wrong.
