When I sort files by name in XP the zero's at the front of the file name are
being ignored.eg 0001.jpg 000002.jpg 003.jpg 00000004.jpg. whereas I would
want them sorted 00000004.jpg 000002.jpg 0001.jpg 003.jpg. is there a fix to
this?

Old complaint (practically since XP was released although the first hit I
found was only back to 2003...)
http://www.gearbits.com/archives/000418.html

Which should lead you to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319827

Which *may* get you want you want - although reading what you want seems
strange to me. Seems you are trying to organize by putting a set number of
zeros at the beginning - not only that - but in descending order. ;-)

No - I'm pretty sure there isn't a "solution" to this as I think it's
done on purpose to keep the integrity of an Alphabetically arranged
list.

However, if you want to have the files arranged in a specific order -
Right-click on each file and choose 'Properties' to bring up the file's
property page.

Then click on the 'Summary' tab along the top.

Then fill in the 'Comments' box with either an alphabetical or numerical
code. i.e. :

AAAA

....then, in the next file you want to appear in the list - fill in :

AAAB

....finally, right-click on the detailed view columns and select
'Comments' to show the 'Comments' column.

Click on the 'Comments' column to arrange in the way you have specified!

Or, batch-rename all the files replacing the 0s with As, :

ren 000*.jpg AAA*.jpg
ren AAA0*.jpg AAAA.jpg
ren AAAA0*.jpg AAAAA*.jpg
ren AAAAA0*.jpg AAAAAA*.jpg

I'm very sorry, apart from these, I don't know any other ways to do
this - but these do work.

you might try adding
an apostrophe at
the beginning like

'000001.jpg

Place a 1 first...

10001

Maybe the following article would offer something useful:
