File size vs disk space

Dear All
Currwntl I am running with a PC with 4 drives. My primary drive has been
partioned in 5gb (C drive) and 3gb (D drive).

The C drive only contains windows XP and no other software. They reside
in a seperate drive. For some reason I am getting a message thats says i
am running out of disk space.

on the C drive I have less then 500mb left although i checked the
folders and below is a summary:

Doucment & Setting = 71.6MB
Program Files = 464 MB
Windows = 1.23GB

Now even with the maths its still under 2gb's. I have specified the
folders to "show all files". I do not know why progarm files is showing
so much when all the software resides on another drive.

I have scanned for viruses and its come up negative (Nortons Antivirus)
and I am running a firewall, again Nortons Internet security.

What am i not seeing.

Please can anyone help?

Sammy

Unhide Protected Operating System Files from the Folder
option, View. Then you will find Pagefile.Sys, Hiberfil.Sys
and other's that are currently "Stealthed" from view.

A lot of the "missing" space is probably being used by System Restore, in a hidden system folder called System Volume Information. It is not enough to just show hidden files and folders, you have to uncheck the box "Hide protected operating system files...". Only with that setting can you do an accurate analysis of disk usage.

Some programs are going to be in the Program Files folder unless you go to unusual lengths to move them -- things like Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.

Thanks R

Did that and now I can see that Hiberfil.sys has 1gb and Pagefile.sys
has 1.5gb. Now what can I do to reduce this file size?

Have you opened the Programs File to see what's there? Some programs will
install elements to the C drive even if you specify another drive for the
install.
Also where is your Pagefile and what size is it?
Also have you cleared out temporary Internet and temp files?
And cleared out the Recycle bin?

Hiberfil.sys is used for the Hibernate function, possibly helpful for a laptop to preserve the current system state when the battery runs down, but not of much use for a desktop computer. To disable that, click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Power Options, then the Hibernate tab.

Pagefile.sys is your pagefile, used as virtual memory to supplement RAM (same thing as swap file in Windows 9x). You can move most of that to another Drive/Partition, but leave a small pagefile on C: drive. If you have a second physical drive, as opposed to just another partition on the same drive, use the other drive for this so Windows can read and write to the pagefile while also using the primary drive. To change the pagefile, go to Control Panel, System, Advanced tab, Performance Settings button, Advanced tab. Be sure to use the Set button to apply any changes.
