File sharing working only one way

Hello,

I am having file sharing problems on my network of 2 computers. It started
when I did a Windows Repair installation and re-installed all Windows updates
including SP2 on the family room computer running XP Pro. The study room
computer running XP Home now cannot access shared folders on the family room
computer, whereas the family room computer can still access the shared
folders on the study computer. The family room printer can no longer be
accessed as well. I re-ran the network wizard on both computers but this did
not fix the problem. I disabled firewalls on both computers, which are
connected through a Netgear router, so it does not seem to be related to a
firewall protection.

I get the error: \\fam-room-comp-1\shareddocs is not accessible. You might
not have permission to use this network resource. ... Access is denied.

This may not have anything to do with the sharing problem, however, when I
was doing the Windows Repair installation on the family room computer I got
the warning: The procedure entry point GetIUMS could not be located in the
dynamic link library MSDART.DLL. Not sure what to do about this warning.

I would be very appreciative if someone could help.

Carey,

Thanks for the link to your well documented and helpful site on fixing
network problems! I will go through the pages and sign you guest book. I can
already see some things I need to do.

Thanks,
Gary

Eric,

The 2 computers I referred to are connected through cat5. The router also
supports wireless and I have a notebook that connects through it to my work
computers. From Carey's web page it looks like the Cisco VPN installs some
components that need to be uninstalled.

Gary

My pleasure! I hope it helps!

Nice to know about the Cisco VPN. I use it as well and have not had the
difficulty you mentioned. But I keep a note on this.

Carey,

I followed your well documented net problems web page and ran into a
question. Following your recommends went well on the study computer (running
XP Home), however, I ran into a descrepency on the family room computer
(running XP Pro).

On the family room computer the installation history on the Windows Update
shows that SP2 was successfully updated. I can also see a restore point
entered as well. From your net problems web page, however, there are 2 menus
that do not match for the family room computer, and you suggest that SP2 is
not really installed if they do not match. First, the Advanced memu of Local
Area Connection Properties does not match (having an Internet Connection
Sharing section also) and my Computer Name menu under Network Connections >
Advanced > Network Identificaiton has an additional button to use the Network
Identification Wizard. All other menus match your site.

So I am confussed if I have SP2 installed proberly or not. I tried to do a
system restore prior to SP2 being installed but Windows would not do a
restore. This option will not work so I cannot re-install it. So I complete
all of your recommended steps on both computers and I still get the same
error (listed below in original email). Frustrating....

I would be very appreciative if you have any further suggestions.

Thanks
GaryM

Disabling the firewall and uninstall the firewalls are two different things.
I recommend uninstalling the firewall, as my web-site suggests as tip one.
Secondly, I recommend you install and run the REG fix for XP networking,
that is also in the config steps of my web page, if you haven't already done
so.

Third, ensure you've enabled the guest account and cleared the password,
exactly as described on my web-site. Do not take short-cuts.

Finally, if the PC is XP PRO:

1. Click Start | Run, type "secpol.msc" in the box, and click OK.

2. Click Local Policies.

3. Click User Rights Assignment

4. Click "Access this computer from the network" and make sure
that the Everyone group is included.

5. Click "Deny access to this computer from the network".

a. Make sure that the Everyone group is NOT included.

b. If simple file sharing is enabled, make sure that the Guest
account is NOT included.

Carey,

Thanks again. I did follow all instructions on your web page precisely. So I
reinstalled SP2 and checked your additional suggestions (settings were
already as you suggested). But to no avail.

So I happened to unshare the shared documents on the family room computer
that was not able to be shared with the study computer, then I set it for up
sharing again. And this cleared up the problem! Hurray!

Thanks again for all your invaluable assistance.

Regards
Gary
