File sharing with W98

A client has a two computer network with XP Pro and W98. I set up the C
drive on the XP Pro to share with the other computer, and all the other
computer can see is a password request for IPC$. I have shared the drive as
C.
I even removed the ethernet connection (which the network is using) from the
firewall.
According to what I have read, using the simple sharing on XP should make
the drive available to every user on the network as guest.
What am I missing?

Firewall problems block access completely -- they don't cause password
prompts. I recommend turning the XP firewall back on.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on the XP Pro computer (and only on XP,
even if it tells you to run it on the other computer). That's often
all that's needed to fix the problem.

If that doesn't do the job:

1. Make sure that the XP Guest account is enabled for network access
by typing this line at a command prompt:

net user guest /active:yes

2. Remove any network password from the XP Guest account:

a. Click Start | Run.
b. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK:
c. Click Guest.
d. Click Reset Password.
e. Click OK without entering a new password.

fixed IP addresses and made sure they were both on the same workgroup. I
can see the shared resources on the W98 computer from the XP Pro one. I can

it, I get a password request for \\Dell-001\IPC$. The C: drive has a folder
shared as "data". I have had the C: drive shared as C. I can almost always

Un-share and re-share the folder on XP Pro and see if that solves the
problem. If it doesn't, keep reading.

Is simple file sharing enabled or disabled on XP Pro? To see, open My
Computer, click Tools | Folder Options | View, and scroll to the end
of the list.

If simple file sharing is enabled, the steps that I gave should solve
the problem.

If simple file sharing is disabled, network access to XP Pro works
just like network access to W2K Pro, with the exception that, by
default, XP Pro requires passwords on user accounts for network
access. Create a user account on XP with the same user name and
password that you use to log onto W98.

If those steps don't solve the problem, there are a couple of more
obscure things to check, depending on whether simple file sharing is
enabled or disabled.

but in the sharing dialog box, the message at the bottom says the folder is
available through the firewall.

I don't think Steve supports use of CDiag - that's my own little hack^H^H^H^H
utility.

Looking at its output (only from DELL-001, as its scripting only works on
Windows NT and up), I see a couple concerns.
# DELL-001 can't ping itself or TCE-002, by ip address even (or did you munge
the CDiag log?).
"DELL-001 ping 192.168.0.1"

# DELL-001 can't "net view" TCE-002, by ip address or by name.

You need to look for a misconfigured or overlooked firewall.

Try this on the XP machine:

1. Run the registry editor.

2. Open this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

3. Look for a value called "RestrictAnonymous", of type DWORD. If it
doesn't exist, create it.

4. Set the value to 0.

5. Close Regedit.

6. Reboot.

Then try accessing it from W98 again.

It did have two RestrictAnonymous, and they were set to 1. I had the client
delete one of them and set the other to 0 and reboot. W98 still sees the
same thing...a password request for IPC$.

Yesterday I set Simple File Sharing off, set up both computers with a common
logon and password, made sure they were on the same workgroup, and that I
could ping the XP Pro from the W98. W98 still sees nothing but a request
from XP Pro but a password request for IPC$. If I do net view \\DELL-001
from W98 I get an error telling me the file is locked, etc.

What now????
