File Sharing with Vista and XP Pro

After reading & doing all the suggestions re this problem, I still can't
access folders & directories. I am running XP Pro on a laptop wirelessley
connected to a router to which I have my Dell desktop running Vista Home
Premium, which is connected to the router (Lynksys WRT54GP2-EA). Network map
shows my laptop, but I can't access folders on it. The Laptop sees the Vista
PC & I can't access folders etc on it. They ping each other fine. With
firewalls turned off, it makes no difference. I tried the solution to make
the root directories available to everyone, but got 'failure' messages for
heaps of files on the Vista PC.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

What is the error message when you attempt to open the shared folders on XP
from Vista and vice versa?

'Network', shows both PC's, however when I select the XP one which is via the
wireless router, I get the message "Windows can not access \\'computer name',
Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with
your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click
diagnose." When I select Diagnose, I get the message, 'Windows cannot find
"HAL5"' (thats the name of my XP laptop). Then says, "Windows sent the
request to the DNS server and the server responded that the name was unknown".

How come it says it is unknown, when it comes up in the network display? I
did notice that it tends to disappear from the network display, but will
reappear if I refresh.
I also have a wireless printer on the router, which I also can not access
from my wireless-connected laptop, even though I can ping it also from the
laptop.

Regards,
Rick.

try accessing HAL5 using its IP address e.g. \\<ip address>

i supposed your wireless router has print server built in it. you will need
to consult the router's manual on how to configure the network printer.
Normally, you will be supplied with drivers to be installed on the guest
computers so as to be able to access the network printer.

Network I notice in the networking diagram that is displayed, that my Vista
PC, external hard drive & router all show up in Location "HAL"; but my XP
laptop only shows category & Workgroup. Why does it not show Network
Location? As I said previously, I can ping both ways & the Network map shows
all connected devices (except my printer). It also displays the MAC address
of the XP PRO laptop, but I can't access any shared folders on either machine
via the network.
Reading all the posts, heaps of users are having the same problem. Is
Microsift going to do something about this or what?
All I want to do is access folders on 2 networked computers! This is a real
headache!
