File Sharing Only Works One Way

B

Bob Simon

I want to share files between a computer running XP Home (bob1) and
one running XP Prof (bob2). I've shared the desktop on both machines
and both have a user account bob as administrator with the same
password. bob2 can open bob1's desktop but when I try to go the other
way, I get a logon failue: unknown user name or bad password.

ICF is disabled on both machines. NBT is enabled on both. The node
type of bob1 is "Unknown" while the node type of bob2 is Hybrid. Is
this a problem?

The following info applies to bob2:
Under Desktop's sharing permissions, Everyone has read allow checked.
Simple file sharing is disabled.
Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts is set
to "Classic - local users authenticate as themselves".

I hope that someone here can suggest what I should check next because
I'm stuck.

Try enabling the Guest account on bob2.

Doug,
As you suspected, Guest account is disabled. Why should this be
enabled?

In the mean time I found a Practically Networked article on passwords,
which helped me solve the problem, but I can't figure out why.
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/03userpasswords.htm
explains how to permit network access without a password. When I
disabled "Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login
only" on bob2, I was able to bring up the desktop from bob1.

Does this make any sense? Why would this work?

Bob,

Windows XP Home uses Simple File Sharing, which authorises access using the
Guest account only. To share files between XP Home and XP Pro, you should
enable Simple File Sharing on the XP Pro computer, and enable the Guest account
on both computers.

See the document about file sharing, between all different versions of Windows:
